Celtic folklore deals the Reed a dual fate. It’s a tool, but also a weapon. An instrument of creativity, but equally of manipulation. At once a symbol of protection and betrayal.
Like the Reed, we are neutral vessels: bringers of light AND dealers of darkness. The aspect we amplify (by choice or default) often depends on how closely we attune to the wisdom of our hearts. We can hope for harmony to arrive, or we can proactively promote its emergence. Reed Magick gives us a way to examine the myriad cycles of birth/growth/death we navigate throughout our lives, and to create more moments of heart coherence and flow.
Following the lessons of the Reed, we learn to spot when we’re using our gifts to elevate (vs. diminish) ourselves and others. From there, we can confidently pour our energy into the relationships and endeavors that resonate with our values.
Here are a few ways you can use Reed Magick to access more of your heart’s wisdom:
Create a playlist of heart-stirring songs.
As you listen, meditate on those areas of your life in which you feel confident expressing your light and sharing it with the world.
Reflect as well on areas where you are hiding your gifts in the shadows.
Finally, reflect on where you feel you have not yet found your integrity and are (metaphorically speaking) splashing around in murky waters.
Let the songs move you to create new ways of engaging with your light AND your darkness in ways that elevate your (and the collective) consciousness. Be your own inspiration!
Make a reed “bouquet.”
Gather reeds from a nearby marsh, river, or pond (please make sure to gather only what has already fallen) and create your arrangement.
Examine the structure of the Reed—its channels and its proudly straight stalks. Its network of tubes.
Reflect on how the materials you see represents only the outward expression of its complete nature. Below the surface of the water lies a vast web of roots that allow the reed to rebirth itself each spring.
Reflect on the human cycles of birth, growth, death, and rebirth. Notice which of these cycles represents your current state of mind or emotional timbre. Meditate on the truth that we can never stay in any one of these cycles forever.
